Catholic boy in UK refuses Cub Scout pledge of allegiance to Queen
.- An eight-year-old Catholic boy cannot be a Cub Scout in Britain because he refuses to pledge allegiance to the Queen of the United Kingdom on religious grounds.Matthew McVeigh, who lives near Glasgow, refused to recite the Cub Scout Promise because it requires swearing allegiance to the Queen. He was told he cannot become a full Cub Scout as a result, the Daily Mail reports.
“It’s not fair. I don’t want to say a promise that I don’t believe in. I really enjoy the Cubs and don’t want to feel left out or different from everybody else,” Matthew said.
You’re right Matthew, it isn’t fair. It isn’t fair that we are at times, forced to put a Queen, or a Flag, or a President, or a Country above God, and our Catholic faith. You will learn in time my little friend, that unless you live in Italy, Poland, Spain, Brazil, and a few other small countries, Catholics are looked upon as the devil himself.
As it is in my country, a lot of Catholics feel the same as you. But do not play the victim card. We have been around since Christ Jesus told Saint Peter ” And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”
Do not get discouraged my young friend. Christ Jesus, and the Communion of Saints are with you. As they were with Saint Thomas More right before he was martyred for not pledging to serve the King he stated “I die the king’s faithful servant, but God’s first.”
Dear Little Matthew,
Not fair? Of course it’s fair! Just like the rule that only men can become Catholic priests-after all, it is tradition-only little boys who pledge allegiance to the Queen can become Cub Scouts.
Get used to disappointment! In the meantime, why not join another club which doesn’t violate your values? I suggest Synchronized Swimming.
Now now Snarky.
